This course is for practitioners working with children and young people across Derby and Derbyshire with responsibility for safeguarding. Please make sure this course is suitable for your role, and you have completed Working Together: A Shared Responsibility before booking on this course. It is designed to give practitioners a greater understanding of the impact of child sexual abuse and how we can safeguard children and young people.

There may be parts of this course that you find difficult and upsetting. Please remember to practice self-care and take a break where needed, or speak to a colleague or manager for support. There will be an opportunity to take a 15 minute comfort break during this course. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine the definition of child sexual abuse
  • Identify worrying adult behaviours
  • Explore children’s voices, barriers, indicators and behaviours
  • Explain the underpinning theories of child sexual abuse
  • Explore the impact on children, vulnerabilities and characteristics
  • Understand parental vulnerabilities and contexts
  • Know how to respond and what this means for your practice
  • Identify ways to support a child and signposting to services

Virtual Training – essential information

  • Your learning is important to us, please participate fully in the training. During the training you will be asked to work in breakout rooms and take part in other interactive activities. To promote engagement please keep your cameras on during these times to support interaction with the group.
  • Please treat this virtual learning as you would face to face, leaving behind emails and other work commitments and avoid interruptions by planning your training accordingly, this is your time.
  • We recommend using the MS Teams platform on a laptop or desktop computer.
  • Headsets or earphones are recommended for virtual training, however if these are unavailable you must make sure you are in a private space or quiet room to maintain concentration and confidentiality.
  • The MS Teams link and course materials are available to download from your training account 10 days before the event. A copy of the slides, training handout and your certificate will be available to download from your account after you have completed an evaluation. 
  • Delegates attending more than 15 minutes after the start of the event may be asked to rebook on a future date and may not be eligible to receive a certificate.
