This training is relevant for Designated Safeguarding Leads, Business School Managers, HR Managers and Officers, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about how DBS products and services can support your own safeguarding practices. The workshop will be delivered in collaboration with the Derby and Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Partnership, by the Regional Outreach Advisor for the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) in the East Midlands.

If you want to work or volunteer in England, Wales, the Isle of Man, Jersey or Guernsey, you may be asked for a DBS check and employers can ask for this on appointment. If you regularly request DBS checks for your staff or volunteers, then it is useful to understand what makes them eligible for a certain level of DBS check and how working in “regulated activity” with children or adults affects this. Employers need to check that anyone they employ in regulated activity is not on the “barred list” in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, which would prevent that person from working with certain workforces.  It is also the legal duty of the employer to inform DBS when something goes wrong and an employee is removed from working with children and/or vulnerable adults.

This workshop will explain the purpose of the DBS, the part it plays in safer recruitment and how different DBS products and services work. We will cover:

  • What types of DBS checks are available and their eligibility
  • The update service
  • How information is filtered on DBS certificates
  • How “regulated activity” with children and adults is defined
  • What leads to an individual being added to the “barred list”?
  • The harm test
  • When do you have a legal duty to make a referral?
  • How to make a good quality barring referral
  • Q & A
